What saves more energy? Swapping your daily car commute for an electric train? Car pooling for the school run? Turning down your thermostat by one degree centigrade?

These were among the questions that students from eight WCSA schools had to answer when they took part in an eco quiz organised by students on the Wellington College Student Sustainability Council.

Ten students from each of Garth Hill, Easthampstead Park, Charters, Edgbarrow, Ranelagh, Bohunt, The Holt and Waingels schools all took part in the online quiz, choosing from topics including travel, energy and food.

For the second year in a row, Garth Hill School was crowned the winner, earning them £500 to support the development of a student-led project focused on sustainability or climate action. Charters School took second place in the tournament and were awarded a prize of £300 in recognition of their outstanding participation and performance and Easthampstead Park took third place.

Charlotte Winsor, Head of Geography at Garth Hill, said: “The students really enjoyed taking part in this quiz and we are delighted to have won it for a second year. The quiz gets them thinking about the carbon footprint of many different activities and what we can all do in our lives to make a difference.

“We used last year’s prize money to set up our bee-keeping club by purchasing more suits to get more pupils involved.  This latest prize will help us to continue with this project and develop our eco garden that we have just stared to create by digging a nature pond.  The money will enable the pupils to grow this idea.  We have been very grateful for the opportunity to take part.  Thank you to the Wellington College Sustainability Council.”

Wellington College student Leo, from the Sustainability Council, said: “This year’s tournament brought together more than 250 students, collectively working towards 76 environmental pledges and demonstrating inspiring enthusiasm for environmental awareness and action.

“Every participant contributed to making this initiative such a meaningful celebration of climate engagement and positive change.

“Thank you to all schools, staff, and students who participated and supported the Eco-Tournament this year. You are all helping to build a stronger culture of sustainability within our wider community.

“We already look forward to next year’s tournament and to seeing even more young people leading the way for a more sustainable future.”
