Could you make a wind turbine out of Lego or get to grips with Pi?
That’s what students on a STEM Day did this week – along with block based programming to control robots and guide them through an assault course, and building a truss bridge.
The event run by the Wellington College Student Alliance featured lessons in physics, DET, computer science, and maths.
There was also an ibricks Lego session, which challenged the students to build a wind turbine, using knowledge about transmission types and gear ratios.
The DET lesson gave the students 40 minutes to make a marble run out of card, straws, tape and glue. Working in pairs, the aim was to keep the marble moving for as long as possible, with two students from The Piggott School, Ava and Yasmin, taking home a trophy each with a winning time of 27.35 seconds.
One teacher said afterwards: “This was a fantastic day overall and the students really enjoyed it and learned some theoretical and practical skills.”
Another said: “All the teachers were really engaging and showed a genuine passion for their subjects. A great day of enrichment for our students.”
The schools involved included Edgbarrow, Collingwood, Yateley and The Forest, with 150 students attending along with their teachers.
