How to ace a medical school interview was the subject on the agenda at a preparation day held at Wellington College.
The medical applicants preparation day on November 5 attracted 23 students in Year 13, all of whom have applied to medical school and needed to prepare for interviews. They were joined by 10 students from Wellington College sixth form.
Guest speaker Dr Abe Bashir discussed interview styles, and also put students on the spot, making them role-play a mini interview.
The students, who came from 12 schools in the Wellington College Student Alliance including The Holt, Ranelagh and St Crispin’s, were also able to put questions to a panel of Old Wellingtonian medical students and doctors.
They also heard from two doctors, Dr DJ Hamblin Brown and Mr Anthony Armstrong, about their own paths into medicine.
Feedback from students was very positive.
A student from Hugh Faringdon School in Reading said: “I found it very useful as I learned what different MMI stations would look like and what kind of skills as a future doctor I would need to show to be accepted to medicine. I also found Abraham’s sessions for interview prep extremely useful as I learned lots of stuff I didn’t know about before.
“I think listening to other doctors who didn’t make it first time round also opened up my mind to the idea that even if I don’t get an offer I can always try again next year.”
And a student from Maiden Erlegh School in Reading said: “I really benefitted from the interview preparation day. Dr Abraham gave very useful advice, which I have never heard from resources such as YouTube since a lot of the YouTube videos are quite old. I liked how he gave very updated and precise advice, it was genuinely amazing and gave me a sense of direction.
“I also appreciated how you included medical students and a plastic surgeon because that genuinely gave me motivation that it’s okay to make mistakes.”
The event was an annual day run by the Wellington College Student Alliance.
