Could you write a programme that could make a robotic car move? Or create a wind turbine out of Lego?

That’s what students on a STEM Day did today – along with a catalase experiment, and the challenge of making a marble run out of cardboard and sticky tape.

The event run by the Wellington College Student Alliance featured lessons in computer science, biology, DET and maths.

There was also a session run by Taylor Wimpey West London, who talked about what housebuilders take into account when buying a development and set the students a challenge to build a weight-bearing tower out of straws and tape, and a session from ibricks, which showed the students how to make a wind turbine out of Lego.

One student said: “I really enjoyed the Lego and trying to make the turbine. And the marble run was good, although our marble fell off quite fast.”

Another said: “The robots were brilliant, I really enjoyed writing the block programme to make the car go forward and turn corners and turn around 360 degrees.”

The schools involved included Kings Academy Binfield, Gordons, Ranelagh and The Forest, with 150 students attending along with their teachers.
