Nothing tests trust like having to lean on someone else when you are on a rope many metres off the ground.

And that’s what students from The Winston Churchill School in Woking, Surrey, had to do when they came on an Outdoor Education day at Wellington College.

They also had to rely on their team mates on the ground, who were pulling ropes to keep their harnesses taught and catch them if they let go of each other.

The daunting activity was just one on many on the first of 10 Outdoor Education Days being offered to members of the Wellington College Student Alliance this academic year.

They are taking place after three successful pilot days earlier this year led by outdoor education professional Simon Waller, which aimed to help students for whom regular school attendance had become a challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Winston Churchill teacher Dan Martin enjoyed the day. He said: “The students were talking about different elements of the day the whole journey back.

“It was great to see the students in a different environment, out of their comfort zone, working on many skills needed in life.

He added: “Simon was great! Very patient with the group and able to draw out of them lots of learning opportunities.”

And one participant added: “I learned about trust because with the last activity we had to trust the whole team.”
