A student on the Wheeler Programme has furthered his interest in the law by spending two days in a London crown court.

Charlie, who is going into Year 12, went to Southwark Crown Court last month thanks to Nour Abuarqub, its Crown Prosecution Manager, after he met her during a study day on the programme at Wellington College.

He says: “I observed a wide range of trials, bail hearings, and sentencing procedures, which gave me a deeper understanding of how the criminal justice system operates.

“I learnt about the importance of case preparation, including how evidence is organised and presented, as well as the roles and responsibilities of different legal professionals such as judges, barristers, solicitors, and court clerks. Observing the interaction between the prosecution and defence provided me with valuable insight as to how each side works to build and present their case.

“After this, I was able to meet Venandah Madanhi, a Finance Associate at Proskauer who mainly works in Leveraged Finance. I was lucky enough to have lunch with her, and we spoke about how large-scale finance deals are put together, what her role involves day to day, and the skills that are important in this area of law. She also told me about her own career journey, which gave me a clearer idea of the different routes into the legal profession.

“I’m really grateful to have had the chance to connect with Nour and Venandah, an opportunity that was made possible thanks to the Wheeler Programme.

“These amazing experiences gave me a real insight into both criminal and corporate law, showing me the variety within the legal sector and gave me a clearer understanding of what a career in law could involve.”

Charlie joined the programme in Year 9.
