Observing mitosis in garlic root tips was just one of the activities at a Year 11 Wheeler Day this week.
Students enjoyed a biology lesson where they had to put the root tips in hydrochloric acid and then mount them on a microscopic slide to look for the stages of cell division.
They also went to the library to discuss their summer reading book, Dry by Neal and Jarrod Shusterman, and take part in a spirited Kahoot quiz, played Real Tennis, and heard from speaker Steve Beckles-Ebusua on how to protect your privacy when using AI as well as how much energy is used when we ask AI a question.
The Wheeler Programme is a fully-funded programme for state school students within the Wellington College Learning Alliance.
Twenty-four students are selected in Year 9 and the college helps support them until their graduation from the programme at the end of Year 13.
The programme includes a mixture of group activities, visits to workplaces, universities, organisations and people; talks, lectures, workshops and discussions; individual coaching, and tailored mentoring.
