Mind maps and memory palaces were on the timetable this week when Year 8 and Year 10 students came to Wellington College for two Skills Days.
The events were open to all members of the Wellington College Student Alliance, and students came from schools including Edgbarrow, Robert May’s, Charters, Gordons and Blessed Hugh Faringdon.
The year 8 event on October 23 comprised four one-hour workshops: Memory Matters – using the power of creativity and imagination to make learning easier; Be Awesome, Be You – improving confidence and self-esteem through self-reflection and looking at values and what success means; Goal Setting – aspirations for the future and SMART goals; and Pathfinder – understanding and condensing text and association maps.
Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One said: “I learned it is okay to make mistakes. In future I will calm down when I realise it is okay to fail.
Another said: “I learned that I can change my point of view, and how to achieve a growth mindset. In future, I will use different revision techniques, this was a really fun way to learn new skills.”
At the Year 10 workshop on October 24, students also took part in four workshops, including one called “Plan, Review, Succeed”.
