Recruitment for this year’s Wheeler Programme has now started, with a screening survey being used for the first time.
Teachers in schools that are members of the Wellington College Student Alliance are being asked to choose up to 10 students to take part in the survey created by Impact Ed.
The survey will be used to help choose the students who fit the programme best. They will then apply in the usual way via an application form, a reference from their teacher, and an assessment day.
Paul Jennings said: “We are always looking at ways to improve the programme and to be sure we get the right pupils on it so they can get the best out of it. We have been working with Impact Ed for a while now and we hope this initial survey will help us in the selection process.
“This year, for the first time, we are also holding an assessment day for shortlisted pupils, rather than just an interview. This will give us more time with the applicants and also allow them to see more of the college, experience the learning environment here and hopefully have a fun time.”
Students who are accepted onto the programme will come to Wellington three times a year until they leave Year 13, as well as enjoying two residential courses.
Established in 2017, the Wheeler Programme, funded by Nick Wheeler, founder of the Charles Tyrwhitt clothing company, is an educational programme for around 100 selected state school pupils.
Twenty-four students are selected each year in Year 9 and the college helps support them until their graduation from the programme at the end of Year 13.
There are currently three other cohorts (year 10, Year 11 and Year 13) taking part in the programme.
