Could you make a tank out of Lego or get to grips with the Collatz Conjecture?

That’s what students on a STEM Day did this week – along with a catalase experiment, card games and deciphering cyphers.

The event run by the Wellington College Student Alliance featured lessons in biology, DET, computer science, and maths.

There was also an ibricks Lego session run by House of Fun, which challenged the students to build a tank that could go fast, using knowledge about transmissions and gear ratios.

The DET lesson gave the students 40 minutes to make a marble run out of card, straws, tape and glue. Working in pairs, the aim was to keep the marble moving for as long as possible, with two students from Gordons School taking the prize.

One teacher said afterwards: “Thanks for running another excellent STEM day. The quality of the teaching was outstanding and the students were highly engaged throughout the day. Should this event run again next year we would be delighted to take part.”

Another said they enjoyed exploring the practical side of learning. “We liked being able to use equipment that we don’t have in our school like Lego and the Turing Table.”

The schools involved included Edgbarrow, Collingwood, Yateley and The Forest, with 140 students attending along with their teachers.
