Teachers enjoyed dropping paper cones from a height as part of a day aimed at improving their skills in mechanics.

Eleven teachers from nine schools came to Wellington College on June 4 to immerse themselves in strategies aimed at inspiring their teaching of mechanics.

Delivered by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme for the Wellington College Teaching Alliance, the course was open to all teachers of A level mathematics.

It looked at how practical demonstrations can be used to enhance students’ understanding, how examiners’ reports can be used to focus on key concepts and how to provide strategies for supporting students’ revision.

One participant said afterwards: “This day has given me a better understanding of how I can make mechanics lessons more interesting and engaging, and give better visual perspective.”

Another said: “The experiments we did were eye opening and I definitely believe these would nurture more interest in learners towards mechanics.”
