Proofs and circle theorems were on the agenda at a day of professional development for maths teachers.

Teachers from 13 state schools came to Wellington College on November 21 to immerse themselves in strategies aimed at inspiring their teaching of maths.

During the day they discussed strategies for using visuals to explain tricky mathematical concepts which would help make their lessons more engaging and lead to better student outcomes, and how to use simple ideas to solve complex problems.

Delivered by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme for the Wellington College Teaching Alliance, the course was open to all teachers of GCSE mathematics in the alliance.

A wide range of topics was covered, and the attendees said the day gave them renewed focus and confidence.

One participant said afterwards: “This event offered valuable insights into teaching using visuals and was packed with practical ideas and activities I can use in the classroom.”

Another said: “I learned lots of things today. Many nice things to take away and use in the classroom and share with my department.”
