A sixth form student has been using her maths knowledge to help a Year 7 student improve his number skills.
Ella, who is in the Lower Sixth at Wellington College, started tutoring Thomas this term as part of the college’s Global Citizenship scheme.
Their weekly online sessions, developed in conjunction with Thomas’s maths teacher at Tomlinscote School in Camberley, have so far looked at the ‘bus stop’ method of division and how to apply it to word-based questions.
Thomas’s mum said: “We are very excited by this fantastic opportunity.
“Thomas very much enjoyed his first session with Ella and is looking forward to working with her to improve his maths skills.”
Ella was put in touch with Thomas via the Wellington College Learning Alliance, which has forged strong relationships with many schools in the area, including Tomlinscote.
Ella said: “In the near future, I hope to expand the programme so that more Wellington students can do the same and also offer tutoring and mentoring in other subjects.
“I am passionate about leading this programme because it brings me a profound amount of joy to be able to see that I have made a difference, no matter how small it is.
“For me, it is exhilarating to be able to see an improvement in the pupil’s maths skills in addition to seeing him become more confident within himself.
“In the future, I would love to visit the local schools where I am tutoring students to give presentations on engineering, pulling from the knowledge that I have gained from running engineering society as well as studying maths, physics and further maths at A-Level with a focus on encouraging everyone, especially young girls, to become more involved with STEM subjects.”
Wellington’s Global Citizenship scheme aims to empower pupils to become proactive contributors to society, developing their abilities so they can actively engage with the world and make positive social change.
